12:43 pm - Orc Day One, January 14th 2005
Well the day dawned bright and early, and I do mean early. Before heading to Pasadena I actually worked in the morning and was up at 0400. I needed to get some stuff done before I headed over to the convention center. I had to be there at 1100 to help set up the costume display, (including my 3rd age elf armor and my daughters Boromir outfit). Of course I got roped into a last minute meeting and ended up leaving around 1030, but I still managed to get there by 1100 and park very close to the double doors near the costuming room. Luckily I had been to the location the day before and checked out where to park, walked around inside and lucky for me met Adam Malin of Creation (which will come in very important on Saturdays post). So ... I parked my car and hauled all my stuff into the costuming room, which only took three trips.
Wow, what a day. I finally got to meet everyone that I had been talking to, emailing, sharing pics with online in person. I had met a few people briefly in the past year, but now I actually had the opportunity to hang out. What an honor. I immediately introduced myself to Leah in order to snag a mannequin to dress. One of the coolest things we did (did I mention I was part of the costuming track?) was set up a room full of fan made costumes for ORC guests to gawk at. Boy did I feel like I was in the presence of greatness. We had Leah and Carolyns Mt. Doom armor, Suzanne's Haldir Greys, Jess's Arwen Chase, Julia's (JediElfQueen) Eomer, Primmy's Frodo, Garf's Eowyn, Daniel's Helms Deep Armor, ... the list goes on and on.
After dressing my own armor, and helping a few people with theirs, I was ready for my first ever costume panel. (Yes, I was nervous) It was on template building, and I would be talking about my duct tape dummy. Yikes, what a scary thing to have to share with people. It seemed to go really well though but I was really looking forward to the Children's costuming Panel, but that ended up being a bust as it was the same time as Dom Monaghan on the Main Stage. Oh well. It was a learning experience.
What did brighten the morning, was meeting Daniel Falconer. It seems the man has earned himself quite a following this weekend. I must concur that he deserves it. He was genuinely fascinated by our costumes, was very friendly and shared info about some of the fabric, costumes etc. with us and did not seem to mind anyone asking him for a picture or an autograph. (Yup, I got two) His was actually the only panel that I sat through all weekend. ( which I will get to later as well) Anyway, back to rambling.
Around 3pm my daughter finally got there brought by my very best friend Holly. Yes, I did make her go to school. I knew though that she would have more than enough fun over the weekend to forgive me those 3 hours or so that she missed. Well, she arrived and promptly immersed herself in the children's activities. Which were awesome. Hannah and everyone involved did a wonderful job. She learned how to draw Gandalf, Gollum and an elf, all in one afternoon. Of course she did this running back and forth through Daniels panel that I sat through positively engrossed. What a bunch of fabulous stories. Again endearing the man all the more. He tended to start on one topic and then expound upon it with the most amusing side notes and stories. Again I cannot praise the man enough. Afterward my daughter and I walked around a bit and saw all the booths, vendors etc. The first thing she did was show me what Artwork that she had voted for in the artroom. One of the cool activities for the kids was being able to go to the artroom with a hobbit and pick their favorite. She showed me the beautiful Arwen and Aragorn painting that she had picked, which I of course voted for later myself hoping that her pick would win. I am sorry I do not recall the name of the artist. She also adored Judy's Fellowship Bears. Had I known that you could buy one, I would have scooped one up of Sam Bear for her.
Of course we had to go see the booths with the action figures and see which one my daughter wanted to bring home. I was very disappointed in the lack of vendors. The wee annex that the vendors were allowed in was not very good either. I actually had a boy and his father ask me where we got our figures later and I had to tell them where the annex was. They had actually been to the main hall, and missed it. We also stopped by our TolkeinForever booth to say hi to Christy. What a great group. I don't get to go to nearly all the events that TF plans, but I always know that I am welcome.
So.. after our walking foray, it was time to head home. I had to get my daughter home for dinner and my husband had injured his knee the day before, and it was swollen up like a grapefruit. Yes, I did feel just a wee bit guilty, but hey, it was ORC...

09:00 am - My first entry
After having visited ORC this weekend I found it necessary to comment upon friends LJ accounts, and therefore had to create an account in order to do so.
Now having said account, I am hoping to use it for my own random thoughts and musings as well, so here goes... wish me luck...
